The blank space on the wall always needs a touch of tenderness to fill it. When that cotton, leaf and grass double-ring was hung on the wall of the entrance hall, the entire space seemed to be infused with an aroma from the fields. The fluffy cotton balls were like un-melted clouds, while the withered branches and leaves carried the warmth of being sun-dried. The two overlapping circular rings enclosed a silent and healing landscape, making one feel relieved and tiredly worn off as soon as they pushed the door open.
The beauty of this double-ring lies in the way it blends the natural simplicity with the ingenious design into a harmonious whole. It casts a patchy shadow on the wall, like the swaying of the rice fields in the wind. Cotton is the most prominent character in this scene. The plump cotton balls are attached below the inner ring, and the cotton fibers are so fluffy that they look as if they were just picked from the cotton bolls.
The double rings hanging on the wall will assume different postures as the light and shadow change. In the early morning, the sunlight slants in, stretching the cotton shadows very long, casting a gentle white glow on the wall. At noon, the light passes through the gaps of the rings, and the leaf shadows sway on the wall, like the fluttering wings of a butterfly. It is not as flamboyant as an oil painting, nor as realistic as a photograph. However, with the simplest materials, it brings the natural atmosphere into the room, making everyone who sees it unable to help slowing down.
This soothing landscape hanging on the wall is actually a gift from time and nature. It enables us, even in the midst of a busy life, to still experience the tranquility of the fields and the gentleness of nature, and to recall those overlooked beautiful moments.
